Smashed Hits and Golden Chi-Chi's

by Bobby Volare

David Prasad These are the hilarious exploits of Dean and Don's "Breakfast Club" morning show at radio station KKDJ 106 FM in Fresno, done back when radio was still strictly local, at a time when FM Radio had come into its own and was about to receive a rude awakening from MTV. And wouldn't you know, it was also the heyday of Fresno State's Red Wave.

Here's the album that features everything Volare from his first hits, BOBBY'S MAMBO and BLACKSTONE SIDE OF THE STREET to the complete and uncut ROOM TOGETHER featuring the world's biggest ending. And just in time for the 60th anniversary of the JFK assassination, you get the ultra rare GRASSY KNOLL which was actually recorded inside the Texas School Book Suppository Building and rushed to Jack Ruby's Carosel Club for its debut where it was declared "number one with a bullet." Unfortunately, all copies of the record were destroyed by the FBI, the CIA, the NSA, the NBA, the KGB, the KFC, the GMC and AT&T until a solitary pressing unexpectedly emerged thanks to the long awaited declassification of the JFK files by the National Archives this year. Yes, Bobby Volare's SMASHED HITS AND GOLDEN CHI-CHI'S is a cultural avalanche destined to push the boundries of good taste like a techtonic tsunami. Get aboard and feel the rumble before you come to your senses. ... more

Eskimo Pie 06:51
A long, long time ago I can still remember How the public pool would make me smile Out at Blakely’s, I had my chance Dive off the tower or wet my pants And it might make me a hot shot for a while The long climb up it made me shiver One look down, my knees would quiver My skin looked like a pork chop It hurt like hell that belly flop! I can’t remember if I cried As I took my three speed for one last ride It made the cover of TV Guide When Webster Webfoot died Grandma’s saying, how about we have a chicken potpie? Those Lesterburger’s worse than Gerber baby food dry At Mars Drive In we’ll get an Orange Nehi But the valley soda fountains went dry ‘Cause our little Webster just died Around Kearney Bowl we saw the hardtops race And John Glenn’s capsule was up high in space Cause Walter Cronkite told us so We loved J.F.K. and our Nestle’s Quik Euless Park was our Candlestick Back when Fresno was a Giant’s only friend Near Harpain’s Dairy a sitting duck Farmer’s firing salt loads from a pick up truck I was out of luck, on a barbed wire fence my pants were stuck And the Bulldogs tried to take the field The West Coast Relays refused to yield It wasn’t Radcliffe or Beiden Field When Webster Webfoot died We kids were screaming, “Buy, buy another Eskimo Pie This Lesterburger’s worse than Gerber baby food dry At Mar’s Drive In we’ll get an Orange Nehi But the valley soda fountains went dry ‘Cause our little Webster just died” It’s been twenty years and like a rolling stone They keep adding pavement up on North Blackstone But that’s not how it used to be There was Bob’s Big Boy, Last Chance Gasoline North of Shaw, all the hills were green And Fashion Fair was just a future dream In city hall new plans were drawn Big money decisions were being handed down Fulton Street has got to go We’re gonna build a mall here, see? Raise the dough! As the mayor did his Groucho Marx The monkey’s screamed out in Roeding Park The Crest and The Hardy, they both went dark When Webster Webfoot died My dad was saying, ” Let’s get ourselves an ice cold Eskimo Pie Today’s the day they tear the courthouse dome from the sky When the big one comes, son, then you’ll understand why But the marble water fountain went dry Even my new kite wouldn’t fly” (it was a Man In The Moon) Copper smelter in a summer swelter Hey! Lets move those doves and pigeons Get ‘em out to the animal shelter Eight miles high, she’s falling fast! The courthouse dome landed smack right on the grass Bob Long and Dick Moody did a telecast And The Chipmunks on the sidelines, what a cast! The burning leaves were sweet perfume Collegians played a marching tune And Hoppy did a dance, Flippo Jr. sat there in a trance As the wrecking ball climbed up high off to the right Thousands of people cried into the night Uncle Jimmy Weldon called up Chicken Delight And Webster Webfoot died The vendor’s screaming, ”Buy, buy a melted Eskimo Pie We got old cheeseburgers worse than Gerber baby food dry We got Diet Rite, I ain’t got no Orange Nehi Hey man! That water fountain’s gone dry!” Even my kite wouldn’t fly! We held the wake at the Eagle Café Dale Brothers coffee and some Special K But the waitress frowned and looked away I went back to the White Front store Where dad bought our TV years before But the man said, “Webster Webfoot flew away” On Fulton Mall, the neons beam Winos sleep where Del Webb dreamed Useless Pit Stop tokens, the slot cars all were broken At The Three Stooges we laughed the most When ol’ Al Radka was the host Rainbo Bread done burned the toast When Webster Webfoot died So remember, next time you have a chicken pot pie Could be Webster or a mobster, there’s no need to ask why Wreck a courthouse or a henhouse It’s the same, by and by Now that Blakely’s giant pool is drained dry
